Writer Resource Reviews

Editor: olorle3

This guide will review the merits and horrors of some of the books on writing I personally have worked with.

Writing Down the Bones

Natalie Goldberg certainly has the chops to tell people how to write. If nothing else, the number of books she has written on writing is a pretty good indication. And Writing Down the Bones certainly makes a statement itself, having been printed and reprinted and compressed. Of course, that’s not really what drew me to the book. I picked it up as a recommendation from a fellow writer, originally from the library and then almost immediately purchased it for myself. Goldberg’s approach shows her background in Zen even without her stories occasionally mentioning it. The book is very down to earth and practical, addressing those things writers like to try and ignore, like your self-censor and actually getting things written. The personal experience woven into the book makes it both more inviting to read and easier to relate too then other books I have read. It also tends to make me want to jump from reading one of the small sections straight into writing, which is what really keeps this book in my writer’s bag. Check it out, it’s definitely a treat.
