I've always been a swamp lover. When I was a kid, my friend Reid and I would walk up one of the local canyons (it was above the Zoo) to a marshy place where we would spend hours walking through the black goo looking for critters. We nearly always found pollywogs and Rana pipiens the leopard frog, and on occasion we would find an axolotl, a tiger salamander that never "grows up" and loses its external gills. A lack of iodine in the swamp water prevents the axolotl from going through the final stage in maturation.
