This guide will give tips and tricks for surfing and searching the internet and using your computer.


Note: Substitute the Control Key with the Command Key when using a Mac.

INTERNET

Control =

To increase the type size on a page — Hold down the Control Key and press the "=" Equal Sign Key.


Control -

To decrease the type size on a page — Hold down the Control Key and press the "-" Minus Sign Key.


Control F

To find a word or exact phrase on a page — Hold down the Control Key and press the "F" Key. Type the word or exact phrase you are looking for in the box that appears.


Control N

To open up another window — Hold down the Control Key and press the "N" Key.


Control P

To print the page — Hold down the Control Key and press the "P" Key.


To Copy a URL or Website Address

1) All the way at the top of your browser (browser = Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Mozilla, etc), is the "URL" (Uniform Resource Locator) of the web page you are currently on. It almost always starts with a http://

2) Double or triple click the URL with your mouse until the entire URL is highlighted. If it doesn't work try clicking faster or slower.

3) Once it is highlighted let go of the mouse button leaving it highlighted.

4) On your keyboard press the "Control" Key and while still holding it down, press the "C" key (Control Key and "C" Key = Copy) Now you have copied the URL onto your "Virtual Clipboard" and it will stay on your "Virtual Clipboard" until you copy something else over it.

5) You can paste anything that is copied on your "Virtual Clipboard" by going where you want it copied to, ie: document or browser box at the top of your browser and clicking the page or browser box so your cursor blinks there, and then press the "Control" key and the "V" Key, which will paste it into the document or browser. "Conrol" Key and "V" Key = Paste.

6) Once it is pasted in your browser hit enter to go to the URL or Web Address you pasted in.

OR

To Copy a URL or Text Click your mouse in front of the word you want to begin copying. Drag your mouse across the text you want to copy until it is highlighted. Press the "Control" Key and the “C” Key to copy.

OR

To Copy an Entire Page Press the "Control" key and the “A” Key to Select All. Press the "Control" Key and the “C” key to Copy. Press the "Control" Key and the “V” Key to Paste.




SEARCH

Use quotation marks to search for “exact phrases”.


Type in the word twice.

Example: Overstock Overstock "Patrick Byrne"

This will eliminate pages that that only mention your subject once and usually results in more depth about the subject you are searching.


Use a minus sign before a word to refine your search so that it eliminates words you want excluded.

Example: If you are searching for the Easter Bunny and it keeps bringing up thesanitycheck.com you can refine your search by typing in "Easter Bunny" -thesanitycheck.com .



COMPUTER

Basic keyboard commands

Control X = Cut

Control C = Copy

Control V = Paste

Control A = Select All

Control F = Find

Control S = Save

Control P = Print

Control Z = Undo

Control W = Close Document

Control Q = Quit / Close Program

Select text by dragging your mouse across it to highlight it
